The Secretary of State has made it clear that he is keen to introduce a new destination measure into the performance tables by the end of this Parliament. This would show on a school by school basis, the proportion of students who have moved on to full time education, training or work with training programmes at both 16 and 19. It would also show the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).
The timing of this proposal links to the government’s commitment to raise the participation age for all young people to remain in learning until the age of 19 by 2015 and comes at a time when there is growing concern nationally about the increasing number of young people aged 16 – 24 who are unemployed.
