The Government has announced its intention to scrap the existing ICT curriculum from September 2012. New courses in computer science will be introduced to replace the current programmes of study.
This decision follows mounting criticism from the computer professional about the current ICT curriculum up to GCSE that focuses on the use of information technology rather that developing skills in computer modelling and programming. This approach has been described as ‘harmful’ and ‘boring’. It is turning young people away from computer science and not equipping them with the skills employers want.
ICT will remain a compulsory part of the National Curriculum pending the outcome of the National Curriculum review but schools and teachers will now be free to develop their own courses.
