The DfE has recently introduced a tougher definition of persistent absence. Pupils who miss 15% or more of school time are now recorded as persistent absentees. Schools are now expected to step in sooner to tackle absence and, in particular to focus on those students whose record of days missed is starting to get close to the 15% mark.
The levels of school absence and the steps taken by schools to tackle absenteeism will continue to be an important aspect of OFSTED’s new school inspection framework.
