Changes in 16 – 19 education

Just in case anyone thought that the Government’s education reform programme did not involve post-16 provision, the DfE has recently published a series of key consultation documents on proposals to change:

and

These proposals have been developed as part of the Government’s response to the Wolf Review of 14-19 provision

These proposals focus mainly on post-16 vocational provision and, in particular on improving provision for students who have not yet achieved Level 2 (5 good GCSEs including English and maths) and those who have not achieved at least a GCSE grade C in either English or maths.

Inspecting schools with sixth forms

Proposed changes to the OFSTED school inspection framework also could have significant implications for schools with sixth forms.  From January 2012, OFSTED is proposing that sixth forms will no longer be subject to separate inspections but that evidence of achievement, progress and teaching and learning will be included as part of the evidence base for the rest of the school.

Depending on the progress made by post-16 students and the quality of provision, this could have a significant impact on the overall judgements about the school.
